Manager, Sustainable Coffee Policy WORK ABROAD

The Manager, Sustainable Coffee Policy will be responsible to:

1. Analyze the EU policy landscape on coffee,mapping policy opportunities to promote sustainability commitments by the coffee sector that support the transition of the European coffee sector to 100% sustainable sourcing. We will do this by amplifying the successful solutions demonstrated by the company in partnership with Starbucks in the past 15 years. The analysis will make recommendations for policies that support:
Sustainable consumption and production – with a special focus on making certification schemes more coherent;
Development;
Investment;
Trade;
Climate and Energy, as well as forest – with regards to the issue of deforestation.

2. Provide a stakeholder assessmentof companies, industry associations, certification bodies, NGOs and other actors that could support policy changes in favor of 100% sustainable coffee sourcing, and that could become members of a 100% sustainable coffee consortium; and build consensuswith these partners on a common definition of sustainable coffee and an agreement on the role of various certification and verification programs in progressing toward the 100% goal.

3. Develop an engagement strategywith partners on the most promising policy opportunities, and implement the strategy, including by developing policy positions, organizing meetings and other events to promote these positions with decision-makers, and providing input for public consultations. In all these efforts the Manager will build on lessons learned from the company -Starbucks partnership and the verification program developed via the partnership (C.A.F.E. Practices).

4. Secure additional fundingto support the company’s engagement towards 100% sustainable coffee, replicate more broadly the lessons learned by CI and Starbucks and implement projects in additional geographies.

Qualifications

BA/ MA preferred in related field and minimum 3-5 years direct experience with the European coffee sector and knowledge of relevant EU policy initiatives;
Relevant network of contacts in the EU, including key actors within the coffee sector, relevant government ministries, EU institutions and civil society;
Experience of the coffee sector preferred, experience of agriculture supply chain required;
Demonstrated experience in providing market and policy research and analysis, and presenting conclusions in a timely and synthetic report;
Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to engage in constructive dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders including the private sector, generating trust and building consensus;
Demonstrated ability to develop and lead an advocacy strategy;
Excellent ability to work and write in English. Spanish and/or French are also a plus;
Candidates should be EU nationals or have a valid work permit for Belgium.
Working Conditions 
Position requires living and working in Brussels;
Position may involve 25% travel for engagement with external stakeholders as well as CI headquarters and field programs.
