Director Design - Middle East & Africa

Tasks:

Planning Activities 30%

• Assist the AD&C team in the design review process at the relevant stages of each project.

• Review interior design layouts, FF&E drawings and schedules, mood boards, control books and specifications for new projects and write reports to give direction to interior design teams to develop new hotels.

• Assist in the design of master planning projects for both CAPEX lease re-negotiations and key new development leads.

• Create graphic presentations to present master plans to internal and / or external parties, including mood boards of interior design direction.

• Create interior design briefs to assist the process of briefing interior designers in design direction appropriate for each brand and location of the building.

• Review and approve the design direction, materials specification requirements as well as Hilton Standards. Review and critique each completed project and submit a monthly summary report to the Senior Director Interior Design.

• Review interior design specifications to ensure technical Standard requirements are met. Assess value engineering alternatives for products.

• Manage the Project Consultant Panel database pertaining to all design consultants in the region and partnerships with key design firms.

• Review and approve Project Consultant Panel recommendations.

• Assist the Design team with project planning and reviews of each project scope.

• Provide sketch layouts and or CAD layouts to direct interior design, as and when required.

Directing Activities 40%

• Work with Owner/Developer design team and Project Directors. Design direct and guide consultants on each project to achieve HWW Brands standards and requirements.

• Review designs at all stages of the projects for conformity to specific Brand standards and narratives, Design & Construction guidelines and Brand Management direction, for new projects.

• Participate actively in value engineering stages of design for each project and ensure that Brand standards and quality are not compromised in the process.

• Work with pre-opening team and Project Directors on new hotel openings.

• Assist the AD&C team in the review of conversion opportunities to HWW Brands.

• Work with Operations (in Managed hotels) to provide timely design reviews and approvals.

• Assess detailed drawings and providing guidance and feedback at each design stage to ensure the increase in design quality.

• Give detailed direction on design standard compliance with a flexible approach to working with selected design consultants.

Controlling Activities 20%

• Overview of each selected project through to its completion.

• As needed and/or directed, make periodic inspections of the job site during the design process and installation of projects. Monitor the quality of work and adherence to the approved project scope, specifications and Hilton Standards. Lead and/or attend project meetings, as needed.

• Check and approve interior design stage submissions.

Organising Activities 10%

• Build relationships with external design consultants, owners and all relevant Hilton departments to ensure the advancement of the design platform across all Hilton brands.

• Participate in post-opening Design reviews with Operation and AD&C.

• Coordinate own travel and site visit expenses within the departmental budget.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of the company:

• Stays knowledgeable about the Hotel Design industry and works to introduce new products and materials to the company as well as guiding design groups to their availability and potential project application.

• Make a committed effort to tour recently completed Hilton and non-Hilton properties, both locally and in other domestic regions, in order to stay in tune with new ideas and the competitive market.

• Visit new hotels and F&B in MEA on a monthly basis and research new openings across all regions.

• Attend any relevant trade fairs to stay abreast of new design trends and material specifications and assist in the enhancement of the Hilton suppliers’ network across all brands.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Commercial and hospitality interior design experience.

• Previous experience working on high value construction and/or refurbishment projects.

• Outstanding organization skills.

• Ability to focus on multiple projects and design details.

• Exceptional communication skills; written, visual and verbal.

• Project coordination experience.

• Ability to develop project proposals.

• Experience and ability to read and comprehend contracts and agreements.

• Experience with developing and managing project budgets.

• Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, Autocad and other graphic software.

• Ability to work with and gain respect and trust of Owner/Developers interior designers, architects designers, engineers, contractors and Hilton Worldwide departments including Senior Executive, Development, Operations, Brand Management, Global Design and Technical Services.

• Flexibility and sensitivity in method of dealing with various people, personalities, cultures.

• Willing and able to take responsibility and work for multiple projects at one time.

• Ability to endure extensive travel, required on supporting projects under development, or hotels undergoing rehabilitation, within MEA.

• Ability to see, develop and take responsibility of multi discipline design/planning solutions.

• Able to work independently and possess good communication skills both written and verbal.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A university degree in Interior Design or related field or experience in lieu thereof

• Significant work experience within hospitality design.  

• Either currently working for, or have worked for a major international hotel company in similar capacity, OR major design or coordination role in interior design offices on hotel and large mixed-use developments.

• Strong design background and proficiency with AutoCAD, along with Word, Excel, Outlook and Photoshop and InDesign.
