Job Purpose
To provide a comprehensive occupational health service for ground staff, as directed by Doctor (Occupational Medicine) and overseen by VP Aviation and Occupational Medicine (VP-AOM). This should include designing, developing and implementing standards and policies on occupational health surveillance and education, training, supervising and where appropriate, assisting Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) with first aid and medical treatments.
To contribute to the implementation of sickness and industrial injury absence management strategies for ground staff to facilitate an early and safe return to work.
Job Outline:
Undertake a range of health protection/surveillance activities for all ground staff as required, such as administering vaccinations to staff at risk of occupational infections, and staff travelling abroad for work purposes, in line with EK protocol, vision screening, audiometry, skin checks, spirometry, urinalysis, blood pressure, immunization, and administration of medication. Analyse the findings and provide recommendations as appropriate. Initiate follow-up appointments and refer cases to doctors as appropriate.
Liaise closely with senior line management and Group Safety, for instance communicating safety concerns to relevant managers and working with them to formulate an appropriate solution. Work with line management to formulate and implement improvements relating to occupational health, for example designing education materials and delivering key information at team/management meetings.
Research, develop and provide suggestions for implementation of pre-employment medical standards and periodic health checks for safety critical ground staff, liaising closely with internal departments and external authorities and licensing bodies. Benchmark appropriately to ensure the company is following or exceeding best practice.
Design and generate sickness and industrial injury medical reports related to ground staff and provide inputs into the case management and rehabilitation of long term absences with line manager, HR and the treating physician.
Conduct a range of assessments and workplace inspections as mandated by regulations, for example assessments relating to display screen equipment (DSE), liaising with / supporting Group Safety where approporaite in relation to assessments and inspections for personal protective equipment (PPE) and control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH). Ensure that professional knowledge and awareness of best practice in this area is developed and maintained.
Conduct needs assessment for health promotion within the company, prioritise activities in consultation with management, develop and deliver targeted health initiatives. Monitor effectiveness of interventions through audit.
Keep contemporaneous medical records. Maintain medical confidentiality and ethical standards in accordance with professional body and EK policy. Undertake quality improvement initiatives, both for delivery of service and for improvement of professional standards within the department.
Responsible for maintaining expertise and providing information and relevant advice on infection control and disposal of clinical waste in the work place, for departments as directed by Doctor (Occupational Medicine).
Maintain continued professional development through research in the areas of nursing and occupational medicine / health and safety legislation in order to develop / recommend to the Doctor (Occupational Medicine) / VP-AOM, opportunities for improvement in the occupational health provision. Modify provision of services when necessary to meet operational demands. In addition, provide practical inputs into the continuing medical education (CME) needs of all Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and ensure that the agreed training takes place and is properly evaluated.
Perform an oversight role in relation to the provision of occupational health services including allocation of work. (Specific to one post holder)
Qualifications & Experience
Degree or Honours in general nursing or equivalent from an internationally recognised institution (12+3 or equivalent)
Post graduate Occupational Health Diploma essential.
Must hold a license to practice as a registered nurse in the emirate of Dubai, by DHA.
5+ yrs post registration experience in a recognised medical institution with evidence of continuing education and professional development.
2 years experience in Occupational Medicine is desirable.
